During the 1980’s Airbus was beginning to establish itself as a reputable alternative to the popular American aircraft manufacturers. Having already found success with its A300 and A320 model aircraft Airbus knew that in order to succeed in the long-term commercial marketplace it would have to offer a long-range airliner. As a result, development began on both the twin-engine A330 and quad-engine A340 series of aircraft. Airbus offered both the A340-200 model and the larger -300 to airlines around the world. The first A340-200 flew on October 25, 1991 with Lufthansa as the first operator of the type. This was soon followed by the first flight of the A340-300 with Air France as the first operator. During this time, Airbus was also actively developing and manufacturing the A330-200 and -300 models for medium-range routes. The first A330-300 flew on November 2, 1992. French domestic carrier Air Inter became the first to take delivery of the -300 model. Both the A330 and A340 operate with the advanced ‘fly by wire’ technology which provides for more efficient flight operations. Over the past several years, Airbus has worked to improve on its A340 model by offering both the -500 and -600 series aircraft. These aircraft are equipped with more powerful engines, more passenger & cargo space and greater range.
