The B-45 is a four-engine jet-equipped bomber that began development in the United States in 1944, and was officially adopted after World War II. To counter the jet bombers that the German Air Force had put into practical use during World War II, the U.S. Army Air Force issued a request for multiple jet bombers; the North American XB-45 flew for the first time in 1947 at Edwards Air Force Base, and was officially adopted about a year later. The B-45 played an important role in America’s nuclear deterrence for several years before the B-47 bomber was officially adopted. In the Korean War, which began in 1950, it was active as a bomber and reconnaissance aircraft, and secretly conducted intelligence operations against the Soviet Union. All of the 143 B-45 bombers produced were retired by the beginning of the 1960s, but the reconnaissance aircraft type RB-45C ha been active for a long time in the 19th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron of the U.S. Army stationed in Europe.
