Cessna, the famous American small plane manufacturer, purchased the Sable Helicopter Company and built the test bed CH1-1 in 1953, with its civilian model CH-1A taking its first flight the following year. After a successful landing on the summit of Pikes Peak in the Rocky Mountains in 1955, it received an improved engine in 1957 to become the CH-1B and could reach an altitude of 9,076 meters. To this day, its record remains as the highest altitude reached by a helicopter powered by a reciprocating engine.
In 1957 the US Army purchased 10 CH-1Cs and changed the name to the YH-41 Seneca. Between the CH-1 and YH-41 Cessna produced 50 machines, and ceased production in 1962.
