1/72 Kawanishi E15K1 Shiun Prototype

Description

This is an injection-plastic aircraft model kit.

An all-new kit of the E15K1 Shiun high-speed reconnaissance floatplane. This was a unique design with retractable outrigger floats (the top half was actually an inflatable bag which deflated upon retraction), contra-rotating propellor and a large central float that was designed to be released by explosive bolts in an emergency, thereby reducing drag and weight and increasing speed for escape. Though the type did enter limited service, it was not terribly successful. This model features recessed panel lines, a basic but serviceable cockpit (not much will be seen through the framed canopy anyway) and a beaching trailer. Outrigger floats are molded as “inflated”, so some surgery would be needed if one wished to model the outriggers in the retracted position. Markings are provided for the all-gray “Ko-K2-3” of the Air technical Arsenal and the first prototype in allover orange-yellow with black cowl (shown).
