Early in 1938, just after official acceptance of the Type 97 Heavy Bomber, the Imperial Japanese Army ordered Nakajima and Mitsubishi to begin development of its replacement, and the firms began work on the Ki49 and Ki50, respectively. The plane was able to operate without fighter escort and thus specifications were for a top speed of no less than 500kph, heavy defensive armament (including the first tail-mounted gun as well as a 20mm cannon in a dorsal turret), self-sealing tanks, armor plate and more.
The Donryu took its name from the god of a local temple in the city of Ohta in Gunma prefecture, the location of a major production factory for Nakajima, and the present-day location of Fuji Heavy Industries’ Subaru automobile factory.
This nicely detailed kit from Hasegawa will measure about 258.5mm long and 283.5mm wide when completed. It features on marking type for the army aviation communication school in Mitominami (1944 March). Order today!
