Lockheed’s masterpiece transport aircraft, the C-130 Hercules, began deployment in 1956. It is still in service, and it is widely used around the world as a tactical transport aircraft with high operational capabilities. The design features a high main wing and a thick fuselage, and it’s equipped with four turboprop engines. It has strong landing gear and excellent performance at both takeoff and landing on rough terrain, making it highly capable as a modern transport aircraft. The Japan Air Self-Defense Force starting operating it in 1984, and it continues to be active together with the domestically produced C-1 transport aircraft. It is widely known for its participation in the JASDF’s peacekeeping operations overseas. In addition, during the civil war that broke out in Sudan in April 2023, it quickly headed to Africa and attracted attention by helping to rescue Japanese people who remained in the area.

This 1/300-scale model kit of the C-130H Hercules from Platz features easy-to-assemble parts from F-toys that clearly express the distinctive shape and design of the aircraft, such as its high main wing and thick fuselage. The four engine nacelles convey a sense of strength. The panel lines are well reproduced, as are the details of the landing gear and wheels. The kit includes parts for two aircraft, and decals by Cartograf are included for two planes belonging to the 401st Squadron of the JASDF’s 1st Transport Wing, which was dispatched from Komatsu Base to Djibouti in April 1923 to support the evacuation of Japanese nationals in Sudan in northeastern Africa.
