In the late 1800s, August von Parsefal and Hans Siegsfeldt of Germany developed the Drachenballoon (kite balloon), a moored balloon with an elongated air sac, as an alternative to the spherical balloons that had been used for military purposes since the 1700s.
Because these balloons could stay in the air far more stably than earlier spherical balloons, the German balloon corps was established in World War I, and copies of the Drachenballoons were also used by the Allies for observation and reconnaissance purposes.
Despite the rapid technological development of aircraft and airships at the time, the Drachenballoon continued to be used until the 1920s.
