1/32 Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat

Description

This is an injection-plastic aircraft model kit.

Trumpeter’s latest entry into the world of big models is this impressive 1/32 Hellcat. The kit builds into a late F6F-3, but the modifications needed to backdate it (side bulges on the cowl, lower cowl flaps) would be easy for those so inclined. Alternatively, with an aftermarket windscreen an F6F-5 is easily possible, and the kit provides the needed HVARs for that model (not used on the -3 though!). The centerline drop tank also seems to be the type used late in the war on -5s and is not the type generally seen carried by -3s. Typically for Trumpeter we are given a whole lot of detail that will never be seen unless surgery is performed to open access panels, such as the engine accessory compartment and avionics in the aft fuselage. The cockpit, engine, and gun bays will be visible, though, so detail is welcome here. Optional plastic and rubber tires are provided. The wings can be assembled folded or extended, and the control surfaces look to be able to be posed if so desired. Finally, Trumpeter has also given us a tow tractor and bar, but no driver or other crew figures. Decals are for David McCampbell’s “The Minzi” off the Essex and Alex Vraciu’s “19” off the Intrepid.
