The British Air Force’s Spitfire was known as a masterpiece fighter aircraft during World War II. Its main feature was its elliptical wing design, and it demonstrated excellent flight performance. It made its maiden flight in 1936, and its deployment began in 1938; the first mass-produced version appeared in 1939. Many types were produced over its lifespan; one of them, the Mk.IX, was first deployed in 1942. It was equipped with a Merlin 60-series engine, with a two-stage, two-speed supercharger. Combined with a four-blade propeller, its maximum speed could reach 650-km/h. The different versions of the Spitfire played an active role in the Battle of Britain in the early days of the war, and maintained its leading role in the Royal Air Force until the end of the war; it was operated in various countries around the world for a long time after the war was over.

This model kit from Waltersons reproduces the Spitfire Mk.IX equipped with the Merlin 60-series engine. The kit’s parts are cast in plastic toned to match the British Air Force color BS638.
