The Fw190A was an outstanding fighter, but due to repeated upgrades, its weight increased and the increase in engine output was limited, making it inferior to the new Allied fighters. The BMW air-cooled engine in particular had a severe output drop at high altitudes, making it difficult to intercept bombers. Therefore, a liquid-cooled engine installation was tested, and the Yumo engine type was adopted as the D type. Although it was considered promising because the new engine suppressed the drop in output at high altitudes, it was already unable to play a major role due to a lack of both fuel and veteran pilots.
