This is an injection-plastic jet aircraft model kit.
The M2-F2 is a lifting-body aircraft built based on research conducted at NASA’s Ames and Langley Research Centers. The aircraft was manufactured by Northrop and first flew in 1966. The M2-F2, which had an all-metal fuselage and a powerful rocket engine, was severely damaged in an accident during testing, but was later repaired and reborn as the M2-F3. At that time, a third vertical tail was installed between the two tails to increase stability. The lessons learned from the M2-F2 accident were used in the design of other lifting-body aircraft, and the M2-F3 continued to undergo flight tests after 1970; the flight data was used to develop the technology for Earth-return aircraft. The footage of the M2-F2’s landing accident was later used in the opening footage of the science-fiction TV drama “The Six Million Dollar Man.”
This model kit from AMP is a completely new mold! It can be built as either the M2-F3, which is equipped with a vertical stabilizer in the center of the rear of the fuselage, or the M2-F2, which has no vertical stabilizer.
