Along with space and cyber electromagnetic waves are considered an important element in the new realm of military affairs. The field broadly encompasses radio communications and radar and reconnaissance and jamming using this technology is known as electronic warfare. It is an indispensable field in modern military operations but its reality is shrouded in secrecy partly because it is not something that can be seen, and even the Air Self-Defense Force has not actively shown its capabilities and equipment. In this issue the Electronic Warfare Unit of the Electronic Operations Group which is based at Iruma Air Base in Saitama Prefecture and is the only electronic warfare unit of the Air Self-Defense Force is covered and for the first time in an aviation magazine aerial photography and detailed reports on the unit and the EC-1 a mysterious electronic warfare aircraft operated by the unit, are presented. It also introduces the latest status of electronic warfare aircraft from around the world and the history of the Air Self-Defense Force s electronic warfare aircraft.
